The Sea of Cortez is Alive Right Now — And You’re Invited to Dive Into the Magic

Hi friends! It’s Kristi here — and I just had to take a break between dive trips to share what’s going on in the Sea of Cortez right now. Spoiler alert: it’s AMAZING.

April has been one of those months where every dive feels like a gift. The water’s warming up (we’re sitting at a comfy 74°F/23°C), visibility is spectacular, and the marine life? Ohhh boy, it’s putting on a full-blown underwater parade!

What We’re Seeing Underwater This Week

Every dive feels like opening a treasure chest — I mean, where else can you:

  • Swim through massive schools of sardines that shimmer like liquid silver?

  • Catch early sightings of mobula rays gearing up for their famous spring sky dances?

  • Play with the sweet (and sometimes sassy!) sea lions at Los Islotes who seem to think divers are their personal entertainment?

  • Spot tiny critters like nudibranchs, seahorses, and even a sneaky frogfish hiding in the sand?

And that’s just this week. I swear, I could dive these waters every day for the rest of my life and still find something new.

(Pro tip: We’ve been adding surface intervals out at Isla Espíritu Santo lately — it’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the views are just breathtaking.)

When You’re Not Diving (Yes, That Happens Sometimes 😄)

We love getting salty and soggy in the ocean, but I always tell our guests: don’t miss what’s happening above the surface too!

Balandra Beach

It’s our local slice of paradise — soft white sand, calm turquoise waters, and that iconic Mushroom Rock. We’ll often pack snacks and hang out there after a dive trip. Float, paddleboard, or just lay in the sun like a happy sea lion.

El Mogote Mangrove Kayaking

Kayaking here is pure Zen. Birds singing, fish jumping, the occasional dolphin cruising past. It’s peaceful, wild, and sooo Baja.

Eat Like a Local

After a long dive day, I’m all about the freshest seafood — ceviche tostadas, chocolate clams, shrimp tacos… don’t get me started! My go-to spots are:

  • Costa Hermosa – gorgeous outdoor setting, best steaks in town!

  • Sorstis – a local favorite, upscale patio dining, excellent menu and wine list
