If you ask me, some months are just made for diving — and May is one of them.

Here in La Paz, late spring brings a sweet spot of warm water, sunny skies, and something truly magical happening just offshore: the annual arrival of mobula rays. These graceful creatures travel in huge schools and often launch themselves from the water in synchronized acrobatics. It’s like the ocean is throwing its own surprise party.

And trust me, you’ll want a front-row seat.

🌊 Mobula Madness: The Ocean’s Flying Rays

Every May through July, we start to see mobula munkiana — pygmy devil rays — gather in numbers that are hard to believe. Some days, you can spot hundreds from the boat, flipping and soaring like underwater ballerinas.

Whether you’re diving below or watching from the surface, it’s a moment that leaves our guests wide-eyed and grinning. If you’re lucky, you might even find yourself drifting alongside them mid-dive — it’s like being in the middle of an underwater murmuration.

🤿 Why May is the Sweet Spot for Diving in La Paz

We love diving all year round, but May is special. Here’s why:

  • The water’s warming up — say goodbye to chilly wetsuits

  • The dive sites are quieter — fewer crowds = more ocean for you

  • The marine life is on point — mobulas, mantas, dolphins, and even the occasional whale shark are still around

At DiversInnMX, we make it easy for you to relax and enjoy it all. Our all-inclusive dive resort means no hauling gear, no surprise fees, and no stress. Just good diving, good people, and a cold drink waiting for you at the end of the day.

🍹 Kristi’s Local Tip: Post-Dive Perfection

After a day in the water, my go-to spot is El Bismarkcito — a laid-back seafood joint right on the malecón. Grab a shrimp taco, a cold margarita, and swap mobula stories with fellow divers while the sun sets behind the boats. It’s simple, delicious, and pure La Paz.
