Sea of Cortez Diving at DiversInnMX

If you’ve never been to La Paz, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is, “When’s the best time to come?”

Richard and I hear it all the time.

The truth is, there isn’t just one perfect season to dive the Sea of Cortez. Every month brings something different, and every season has its own personality.

But if you ask us which time of year quietly steals our hearts…

…it’s late summer and early fall.

By August and September, the Sea of Cortez seems to settle into its own rhythm. The water is beautifully warm, visibility is often outstanding, and every morning feels filled with possibility. We still get excited loading the boat because we know one simple truth:

You never know exactly what the ocean has planned.

That’s part of what makes diving here so extraordinary.

One morning you may find yourself surrounded by playful sea lions at Los Islotes. They dart through the water with incredible speed, circling divers with the kind of curiosity only sea lion pups possess. Watching first-time divers laugh through their regulator as a sea lion spins inches away is something we’ll never grow tired of seeing.

Another day might bring massive schools of fish moving as one, creating shimmering walls of silver and blue. Eagle rays glide effortlessly beneath you. Colorful reef fish fill volcanic reefs with constant movement. Sometimes we’ll encounter mobula rays, reef sharks, octopus, turtles, or one of the countless species that make Jacques Cousteau call the Sea of Cortez The Aquarium of the World.

And then there are the whale sharks.

Late summer and early fall mark the beginning of whale shark season around La Paz. Every encounter is different, and every one leaves people speechless. Floating quietly beside the largest fish in the world is one of those experiences that’s almost impossible to describe until you’ve done it yourself.

It’s humbling.

Peaceful.

And unforgettable.

Of course, we never promise exactly what you’ll see.

Nature has never worked that way.

The ocean doesn’t perform on command, and honestly, we wouldn’t want it to. Every dive is a new adventure, and even after all these years, Richard and I still find ourselves surprised.

That’s what keeps us coming back.

But here’s something we’ve learned after welcoming guests from all over the world.

When people return home and tell their friends about DiversInnMX, they don’t spend the whole conversation talking about the fish.

They talk about how they felt.

They remember waking up each morning excited for the day’s adventure. They remember climbing back onto the boat with huge smiles and stories they couldn’t wait to share. They remember sitting around the dinner table in the evening, enjoying wonderful food while conversations stretched long after dessert.

Complete strangers arrive on Saturday.

Friends leave the following week.

We’ve watched it happen over and over again.

There’s something about sharing incredible dives, delicious meals, breathtaking sunsets, and a week away from everyday life that brings people together in the best possible way.

We love watching those friendships begin.

One of our favorite moments happens every evening.

The gear has been rinsed.

The cameras are charging.

Everyone is relaxed.

Someone starts telling the story of the day’s dive, another guest adds something they saw, laughter fills the patio, and before long everyone is talking as though they’ve known each other for years.

Those moments matter just as much to us as the diving itself.

Because DiversInnMX has never been just about what’s beneath the surface.

It’s about giving yourself permission to slow down.

To trade meetings for manta rays.

Traffic for turquoise water.

Notifications for sunsets.

Stress for laughter.

For one wonderful week, life becomes beautifully simple.

Wake up.

Enjoy fresh coffee.

Head out onto the Sea of Cortez.

Dive some of the most spectacular waters on Earth.

Come home to a comfortable room.

Share a great meal with new friends.

Sleep deeply.

Repeat.

Somewhere during the week, almost without realizing it, people begin to relax in a way they haven’t for months.

Sometimes years.

It’s one of the greatest gifts travel can give us.

If you’ve been thinking about visiting Baja California Sur, late summer and early fall are wonderful times to experience everything this remarkable place has to offer. Warm water, abundant marine life, beautiful weather, and the slower pace that makes La Paz so special all come together during these months.

Richard and I would be honored to share it with you.

Whether you’re an experienced diver with hundreds of dives in your logbook or you’re discovering the Sea of Cortez for the very first time, our hope is simple.

We want you to leave with more than incredible photographs.

We want you to leave with stories you’ll tell for years.

With friendships you’ll never expect.

With memories that make you smile every time someone mentions Baja.

And perhaps, like so many of our returning guests, you’ll find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even unpacked your suitcase.

We’ll have your room ready.

We’ll save you a seat at the dinner table.

And we can’t wait to welcome you to our little corner of the Sea of Cortez.

Warmly,

Kristi & Richard
