A Month-by-Month Guide to diving the Sea of Cortez
One of the questions we hear almost every week is a simple one:
“When is the best time to dive in La Paz?”
The short answer is—there really isn’t a bad time.
The Sea of Cortez changes throughout the year, and every season brings its own kind of magic. Some months offer warmer water and incredible visibility. Other times of year bring big marine life encounters that divers travel across the world to experience.
If you’re planning a diving trip to La Paz, Baja California Sur, here’s a helpful look at what the seasons tend to offer.
Winter Diving in La Paz
December – February
Winter in Baja is one of the most unique times to dive here.
Water temperatures are cooler, typically 68–72°F, and visibility can be excellent. What really makes winter special is the marine life activity.
Divers often encounter:
• large schools of fish
• mobula rays
• playful sea lions around Espiritu Santo
• migrating whales in the region
While whale diving is not permitted in La Paz itself, seeing these animals during surface intervals or boat rides is always a thrill.
Many divers love winter because the dive sites feel peaceful and uncrowded.
Spring Diving in the Sea of Cortez
March – May
Spring is when the Sea of Cortez begins to warm and visibility often improves.
Water temperatures rise gradually into the 70s, and reefs begin to feel especially vibrant again.
This is a wonderful time for divers who enjoy:
• reef photography
• macro marine life
• calm diving conditions
• smaller group experiences
Spring also tends to bring beautiful light conditions underwater, which photographers appreciate.
Summer Diving in La Paz
June – August
Summer brings warm water, comfortable air temperatures, and incredible activity underwater.
Water temperatures often reach 80–85°F, making long dives very comfortable.
Divers frequently encounter:
• reef fish in large numbers
• rays and schooling species
• occasional pelagic surprises
This is also when we host our Junior Divemaster training program, which makes the resort feel lively and energetic with young divers learning the ropes.
Fall Diving in Baja
September – November
Many experienced divers consider fall to be one of the best-kept secrets in Baja diving.
The water is still warm from summer, often in the mid-80s, and visibility can be spectacular.
Marine life encounters can include:
- large schools of fish
- sea lions around Isla Espíritu Santo
- mobula rays
- reef sharks
- healthy reef ecosystems full of color
Fall is also a beautiful time to visit La Paz in general. The weather is warm but comfortable, and the sea tends to be calm.
This is exactly why we’re hosting our first PADI Underwater Photography Workshop this fall—the conditions are perfect for capturing the underwater world.
So When Is the Best Time to Dive in La Paz?
The truth is that the Sea of Cortez offers something special every season.
Some divers come for the warm summer water.
Some prefer the cooler months when marine life is especially active.
Others return again and again simply because every visit feels different.
What never changes is the beauty of diving here.
The reefs around La Paz and Espiritu Santo Island offer an extraordinary mix of biodiversity, dramatic underwater terrain, and encounters that stay with divers long after they surface.
