If you’ve never been to La Paz, one of the first questions people ask is whether fall and winter are still good for diving.
Richard and I hear it every year.
The short answer is yes. In some ways, these months are better than the ones everyone already knows about.
While much of the diving world is chasing the last of the summer water or packing gear away until spring, the Sea of Cortez settles into a different rhythm. Visibility is often excellent. The sites feel quieter. The marine life keeps showing up. And for a few months, the experience of diving here carries a little more space and a little more calm.
It is also the season when a lot of people start thinking about gifts that last longer than a sweater.
What Fall and Winter Actually Feel Like in the Sea of Cortez
October and November are widely considered one of the strongest windows for Sea of Cortez diving out of La Paz. The water is still warm—often in the mid-to-upper 70s°F—visibility regularly climbs into the range that makes photographers happy, and the sea lions at Los Islotes are active and curious. Whale sharks begin appearing in the bay as the season opens. The overall feeling is clear, settled, and full of possibility.
Winter shifts the experience without taking anything away. The water cools (typically into the upper 60s to low 70s°F), so we move to thicker suits. Visibility stays strong on many days. The sea lions remain part of the daily conversation. Whale sharks continue through the season under the rules set by CONANP and SEMARNAT. And on the boat rides and surface intervals, there is a real chance of seeing humpback and gray whales. The sites feel quieter. The pace slows. A lot of divers who have been here in both seasons will tell you winter has its own kind of magic.
We dive year-round at DiversInnMX for a reason. There isn’t a bad season in the Sea of Cortez. There are just different seasons, and fall and winter happen to be two of the ones we love most. For a fuller month-by-month look, we wrote a longer guide here: Best Time to Dive in La Paz.
What You Are Likely to See
- Sea lions at Los Islotes. Playful, fast, and often the memory that stays with first-time divers and returning ones alike. The colony is one of the most important in Mexico, and the pups treat divers like interesting new toys.
- Whale sharks in La Paz Bay from roughly October through April. Floating next to the largest fish in the ocean is one of those experiences that is hard to describe until you have done it. Encounters are regulated for the animals’ protection, and the season only runs when the sharks are present in sufficient numbers.
- Healthy reefs and pinnacles around Espíritu Santo and nearby sites, full of colorful fish, rays, turtles, and the occasional surprise. The marine zone around the archipelago is a national park and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California.
- Topside whale watching during winter boat rides.
- Smaller groups and a more relaxed overall pace.
Because we keep groups small and tailor the day to the people on the boat, we can chase the best conditions and the things you most want to see. You are not locked into a rigid big-boat schedule.
Most of our diving happens in the waters around Isla Espíritu Santo and the surrounding marine park. The park’s official information is here if you want the deeper context: Parque Nacional Archipiélago de Espíritu Santo. The broader UNESCO recognition for the Gulf of California islands and protected areas is what helps keep this place special.
Why This Season Makes a Better Holiday Gift
A lot of the people who stay with us already have enough things. What they want is time, experiences, and something they can look forward to.
That is why we offer gift certificates.
Starting at $100, a DiversInnMX gift certificate is a simple way to put a few days of Sea of Cortez diving, chef-prepared meals, small-group boats, and Baja sunshine under the Christmas tree. It is digital. It lands in their inbox. And it is one of the few gifts that actually gets used and remembered.
Whether the person on your list is already a diver, wants to get certified, or just loves the ocean, it is usually a better idea than another gadget. And if you are the one who wants to go, it is a perfectly acceptable way to make the request.
You can get one here: DiversInnMX Gift Certificates.
What a Stay Actually Looks Like
We are a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort, but we are also a small, private place designed by divers for divers. That means:
- All-inclusive packages with comfortable private accommodations
- Chef-prepared meals (yes, that is me in the kitchen a lot of the time) plus snacks and drinks
- Daily diving or a mix of diving and whale-shark swimming, tailored to your level
- Included instruction when you want to work on a certification or specialty
- Small groups so the day moves at a human pace
Richard and I (and our team) handle the logistics so you can focus on the water. A lot of people arrive as guests and leave as friends. That is intentional. For more on how we work, you can see our team page or go straight to booking.
Ready to Plan (or Gift) the Trip?
Fall and winter dates fill for a reason. If you have been thinking about La Paz diving, this is a good window to lock something in—or to hand someone the keys to their own trip.

The Sea of Cortez is waiting. The water is clear. The sea lions have opinions about everything.
